Our Commitment To Privacy

Your privacy is important to us. To better protect your privacy we provide this notice explaining our online information practices and the choices you can make about the way your information is collected and used. To make this notice easy to find, we make it available on the footer of every page on the site.

Information We Collect, How We Use It, and How You Can Change It

This notice applies to all information collected or submitted on the Public Knowledge website.

Support Pages

On some pages you can support Public Knowledge by making donations or purchasing merchandise. To facilitate fund transfers we use third-party payment services offered by Paypal and/or Google. These services maintain a separate relationship with you in order to safeguard your financial information. You may review Paypal's privacy policy here and Google's privacy policy here. These services will return the following information to us:

Mailing address
E-Mail address
Phone number

We use this information to: ship merchandise you may order; send donation receipts for your tax records; and/or contact you via e-mail or telephone to request additional information required to complete your order. We do not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete your order, or as required by law.

Action Alerts

On some pages you can respond to an Action Alert raised by Public Knowledge. On these pages we collect the following personal information:

Mailing address
Your comments/views on the issue at hand

We use this information to forward your comments to your own elected representative(s) or to determine its eligibility for submission to regulatory agencies. We do share this information with those representatives or agencies and, in most cases, it becomes a matter of public record that can be accessed outside the scope of our site.

User Registration

If you want to post comments to selected items on the PK site you are required to register. When registering we collect the following information:

We also ask for, but do not require, the following information:

Whether or not you wish to subscribe to our e-mail list
Affinity group
Whether or not you are a registered voter
Whether or not technology or intellectual property concerns have a major influence on who you vote for
Organization
Mailing address

We use this information to learn about the characteristics of our website audience and to determine what kind of communications you wish to receive from us. We will not share personally identifiable information with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. how many Libertarians participated in a particular action alert) to funders, policy makers, and the public. You may update this information at any time by logging into your account and choosing the edit tab displayed above the information you've entered. If you wish to have your account removed from the system please e-mail a request to pk@publicknowledge.org.

Mailing List Subscriptions

If you wish to receive news and action alert items from us you may sign up for our e-mail mailing list. When signing up we collect the following information:

We use this information to send e-mail notices to you. We will not share this information with third parties unless required by law. You may remove yourself from the list sending you the mailing at any time by selecting the unsubcribe link found at the end of every message we send you.

Website Cookies

When you access pages on the PK website we send one or more cookies -- a short string of characters -- to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser. This identity is used to authenticate and authorize your access to services provided on the website. We will not share this identify information with third parties unless required by law.

We use the Google Analytics service, which will also place cookies in your browser. This service allows us to analyze the performance of the website and make improvements where needed. We will not share any individually identifiable information collected with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. number of unique visitors in a given month) to funders, policy makers, and the public.

You may disallow cookies in your browser and still read our site anonymously, but you will not be able to post comments.

RSS Feeds

We use Google's FeedBurner service for publishing RSS feeds. This service embeds tracking images into the feeds and enables us to track how many individuals subscribe to each feed and how often feed item links are selected to access full articles on the PK site. We will not share any individually identifiable information collected with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. number of unique visitors in a given month) to funders, policy makers, and the public.

You may disallow image loading in your RSS feed reader and still view our posts anonymously.

Log Files

Our web server generates a log entry for each item requested. Logs are reviewed daily to detect problems with the site (e.g. broken links) and vulnerability scans. Reports are generated weekly to quantify requests to resources that aren't trackable by Google Analytics (e.g., PDF documents, audio files, and video files.) We will not share any individually identifiable information collected with third parties unless required by law. We may share, or publish, aggregate information (e.g. number of unique visitors in a given month) to funders, policy makers, and the public.

Our Commitment To Data Security

To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.
